Electric car maker Tesla has scored a ten million dollar grant from the California Energy Commission to help it make its next-generation electric SUV/minivan the Model X, Forbes reports. The article says that Tesla will use the grant to hire another 700 workers in 2014, and Tesla will match the grant with $50 million of its own funds.

SolarCity Files for IPO
SolarCity Corp., the San Mateo-based developer of rooftop solar-power systems whose chairman is Elon Musk, filed to raise more than $200 million in an initial public offering (IPO) that shows there are areas within the renewable-energy industry that benefit from cheap panels. The $201.3 million the company filed to raise is a placeholder amount used to calculate fees and may change, according to a regulatory filing yesterday. SolarCity plans to list on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbol SCTY.

Tesla Motors Inc. has unveiled a solar-powered charging station that it said will make refueling electric vehicles on long trips about as fast as stopping for gas and a bathroom break in a conventional car. CEO Elon Musk said at a news conference at the company’s design studio that the company’s roadside Supercharger has been installed at six highway rest stops in California. The free stations are designed to fully charge Tesla’s new Model S sedan in about an hour, and a half-hour-long charge can produce enough energy for a 150-mile trip.

In the next decade, California freeways may be occupied by more cars without a tail pipe if policy recommendations from a recently released report authored by a UC Berkeley climate change policy fellow are followed. “Electric Drive by ’25,” part of a series of reports on climate change sponsored by Bank of America, outlines policies that could be adopted by different sectors of the electric vehicle industry to promote a widespread transition to electric vehicles in the state by 2025.

Bay Area has the second-largest electric-vehicle sales among U.S. metro areas. But for electric-car owners and would-be owners of the vehicles, finding public charging stations, particularly fast-charge ones, in the Bay Area remains a major issue. But more options for drivers aren’t too far down the road. To help keep these vehicles going, firms such as NRG Energy Inc., 350Green and Ecotality Inc. have plans to install more electric-car charging facilities in the Bay Area.
