Bay Area Climate Collaborative, San Mateo County Community College District and Geli Win $3M Award from California Energy Commission for “Internet of Energy” Project
Program will develop, demonstrate and promulgate best-practices for advanced PV, storage and energy management
San Mateo, CA – Prospect Silicon Valley (ProspectSV), through its Bay Area Climate Collaborative (BACC) program, San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD), Growing Energy Labs, Inc. (Geli) has been awarded a $2,999,601 grant with a leading solar company from the California Energy Commission for an energy storage demonstration project called “Internet of Energy” at SMCCCD’s College of San Mateo (CSM) campus. The CSM Internet of Energy (#IoEn) Project will deploy and demonstrate an advanced solar array and storage system that improves grid stability and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
ProspectSV’s BACC program will provide overall management of the project and will develop and promulgate solar-storage best-practices.
“The state’s aggressive clean energy goals require significant advances in storage and energy management technologies, and the CSM Internet of Energy system will be a truly next-generation distributed energy platform,” said ProspectSV Executive Director Doug Davenport. “We’re excited to bring this project forward with our partners, and take a major step together towards a cleaner and more resilient grid.”
The CSM Internet of Energy Project will demonstrate a novel system of solar and storage with advanced energy and demand management to reduce grid variability and increase renewable energy yields. The CSM campus grid provides a unique opportunity to study and evaluate the networked energy system as there are currently many energy efficiency projects to connect with. The system is projected to save CSM $150,000 or more annually.
“We are thrilled to host this advanced energy system at College of San Mateo. It will not only lower our energy costs and further advance our vision of becoming net zero, it will provide a learning lab for training our workforce on leading edge technology,” said College District Chancellor Ron Galatolo.
The distributed generation, distributed storage, and distributed loads will be optimized and coordinated by Geli for increased solar generation and increased value to the College and grid. The Geli system will also include integration with building management controls. Potential for market services will also be assessed utilizing Geli OpenADR 2.0 and interfaces with scheduling coordinators.

The project is slated to begin in this summer. Following design and testing, the advanced system will deployed at College of San Mateo in late-2016.
